In January, an article was published detailing display-related bugs that could be fixed by disabling Multi-plane Overlay (MPO). These bugs include black or white screen issues, flickering, stuttering, and a white cursor problem on browsers such as Chrome. Disabling MPO has been known to resolve these issues.
Additionally, users have reported that disabling MPO can also fix a driver timeout issue that has been observed on AMD Radeon systems, leading to the AMD Bug Report Tool appearing due to the driver crashing, and sometimes even resulting in system freezes or a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). While the driver would usually restart on its own, there are times when users need to restart the display driver manually. However, AMD claims to have addressed this issue with its latest Windows WHQL-signed driver for its latest RX 7000 series cards.
Interestingly, the issue was not mentioned in previous AMD open issues, indicating that the Radeon driver team was aware of it but had no estimated time for the fix. Unfortunately, AMD has not mentioned anything about fixing this issue for RX 6000 or older generation cards, so users will have to rely on the MPO workaround for now.
